Knowledge, Passed Through the Hand

Dr. E. Tamilarasu's relationship with clay began at the Government College of Fine Arts in Chennai, where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Industrial Design in Ceramic between 1997 and 2005 — years that built a sculptor's instinct for form, material and the patient discipline of the wheel and kiln.

That instinct found an unexpected second life in the media industry, where he worked for years as a texturing artist — shaping the surfaces and materials that make digital worlds feel real — across studios including Blue Print, Ken Creative Studio, Sanraa Media Animation Studio and Media One, before working as Assistant Art Director on the Tamil films Ko and Jigarthanda, and on Vijay TV's Jodi Number One.

In 2014, that same fascination with form led him back to clay itself, and to history. His doctoral research at the University of Madras' Department of Archaeology examined the socio-economic conditions of ancient Tamil Nadu as revealed through terracotta figurines — work completed in 2022 and rated Highly Commended. It is a rare vantage point: a practising sculptor who has also spent a decade reading the material history of Indian ceramic art from the ground up.

Today he teaches as Assistant Professor in the Department of Visual Communication, and has lectured on fine arts and archaeology at institutions including Hindustan College of Arts & Science, Meenakshi College for Women and the International Institute of Tamil Studies — carrying the same hand-and-scholarship perspective into every classroom, paper and piece.
